Module 2 Summary

In this module we defined what Capability is, stressing that it is mostly in – born. We differentiated between EQ Capabilities – Personality and Emotional – and IQ Capabilities – Cognitive Abilities, and gave examples of each. We gave several reasons as to why Capability is so important in determining individual job performance.
1. Not everyone has the same Capability and those with extremely high Capability, such as Bill Gates, outperform individuals with similar or better qualifications and experience, who have lesser Capability.
2. We explained that Capabilities are the foundations on which Competencies are built. Those with higher Capability can develop more advanced Competencies and vice versa.
3. We explained that Capability can be actualised but mostly not increased. Therefore, when you employ someone you are limited to the extent to which their Capability will allow them to perform.
4. Crystalized Capabilities result in predictable and default behaviours. Therefore, when employing someone with “counterproductive” or “defective” capabilities they are difficult to change or eradicate.
5. We discussed the concept of “drag, drain and drift”. This is the collective effect of the sum of the Capability deficits of individuals on the overall performance of the organisation. When a person/'s Capability is lacking or poorly matched to a role, it produces drag, drain, and drift in an organisation. Energy is lost trying to fix or manage the fallout resulting from Capability deficits.
6. We discussed the concept of “wind in your sails”. This happens when the Capability of the individuals in an organisation is high and well matched to roles. Energy is spent on figuring out how to perform better.

7. We pointed out that Capability can ONLY be accurately and objectively assessed with Psychometric Tests.

Up Next After the Evaluation...

We have looked at what Capability is and that it can only be assessed by means of instruments called psychometric tests.
So What Are Psychometric Tests?
What Are Their Properties or Characteristics?
What Legal and Ethical Framework Governs the Use of Psychometric Tests?
