Each of these dimensions can be both productive (high EQ) and counterproductive (low EQ). They are normally counterproductive in two settings.
One, when the personality trait is a poor match with the job. For instance, when a job requires someone to work in a team, but the person is self – sufficient and prefers to work alone. The person’s self – sufficiency will work against them in this role and may be counterproductive.
Two, when the personality trait is excessively developed (we talk about overuse of a trait). For instance, when a job requires a person to be assertive, but the person is so assertive as to be dogmatic, autocratic and unable to listen to others and accommodate their views.
